Winter Scene in the Mountains

Hello Beautiful People!

Today I'm sharing a stamping tutorial with one of my most favorite stamp lines - Stampscapes. I sent this little scene to my stampin' sister Linda B in Canada - she is my Stampscapes swap partner for November.

 

  To make the scene I started with stamping the cabin. I masked it with low tack tape and then stamped the mountains, stamping off first so they would be subtle in the distance.  NOTE: when stamping, work from front to back - masking to preserve images. TIP:  after inking up stamp, use a paper towel to dab off color on the bottom of the image when you do not want a harsh line. For the cabin, this allows space for the snow banks.

 

Next, I laid down a piece of scrap torn paper to mask the bottom of the tree line, stamped the trees behind the cabin in green and then removed  the mask. I filled in any missing spots and added detail with markers.

 

Stamped off to add trees in the distance. NOTE: I inked up the just the top of the stamp so it would make smaller trees and they would look further back in the distance. Colored the cabin, added some shading and filled in trees with markers.

Added shading to the mountains and lights inside the cabin with markers.  I also felt like the scene needed more trees, so I just added them in. This is one of the reasons I love making art - you see something you want in your piece and you just add it! 

 

Next, I added in a soft sky with a marker, making horizontal strokes - leaving some white for clouds. 

Added snow with a white gel pen.

Added dimension with glistening 3d paint.

To finish the scene, I added a tree branch and a fence in the foreground.  With the fence being a darker brown, white acrylic  paint worked better for the snow. I also added birds to bring life into the scene.

Window to our World

I made this card for a StampscapesII yahoo group swap with my stampin' sister LindaB. These little friends are so cute!

 

The theme is Window to our World. Part of my world is sharing the joy of designing and creating with my stampin' sisters.  I stamped the cat trio first and drew an extended brick wall. Next I masked the cats and wall, and stamped in trees 078F using colored ink pads. I masked the trees and stamped the mountains 182G. I masked the mountains,  airbrushed the sky, and stamped the birds 302A. The window and curtains are cut using a Spellbinders die. The sparkly curtains are from handmade paper that my stampin' sister Barb G. sent me.  The swirl wallpaper is a retired  SU! background stamp.

Weeds and Things Swap

Last month's theme for the StampscapesII yahoo group challenge was Weeds and Things.

 

I googled "weeds" for my inspiration, and found I had to fine tune the search to "scenic weeds," as I was not getting the images I was interested in for a scene. :)  I found a photo that sang to me, as my ATC sister Sandy would say.

Making two scenes at the same time, I started by stamping the rocks for the background of the scene. I didn't worry about filling them in completely because I was planning for the weeds to be in the foreground and would cover up a portion. Next, I airbrushed in a subtle sky.

 

I colored the rocks  and added a few weeds popping up between the rocks with alcohol markers.

I added the weeds and things in the forefront using rich LUXE inks and Distress Inks  in various shades of green.  I 'found' a new technique when I accidently over-inked one of my  LUXE pads. This time I did it on purpose to give texture and depth to the weeds and things in the forefront.  

 

I masked the rocks and added more grass inbetween them with a portion of a stamp. To create green moss on the rocks, I used a cotton swap.   I also used a cotton swap to dab in a bit more LUXE ink to make the flowers really pop. NOTE: When you allow the ink to dry in between layers and you will get a sharper image. If you want more blended weed and things, stamp over wet ink.

I picked the scene I liked best to send to my stampin' sister Pat. I hope she likes it!

Pathways

This month's theme for the StampscapesII yahoo group challenge is paths/ bridges. For my inspiration, I used a photo I found on the internet. I googled "pathways" and several images came up.  One photo jumped out at me that had beautiful colors in the sky.

I placed my images low to allow more room in the sky. I  picked out my Stampscapes images - 145F, 240B, 278F, 296C, 302A.  Next, I stamped the same scene in two colors schemes. 99% of the time I stamp my scene in black. My partner this month is a very creative woman that I have learned several great techniques from - Barb G. She's had many pieces published in RubberStampMadness. Of course, I had to use something she taught me - stamp in nature's colors. :)

I masked  a circle and the lower portion and airbrushed the sky using Copic markers B23, B28, R08 and Y15. It didn't turn out as smooth as I wanted so I ended coloring over the airbrush. I also used B41 and Y38. 

Next, I colored the scene.

May Flowers

This month's theme for the StampscapesII yahoo group challenge is May Flowers.  For my inspiration, I used a photo from my Dentist's office. Hey, you can find inspiration everywhere! :)  If someone were to look at my mobile phone gallery right now, they would find lots of photos of paintings and photographs from offices, stores and even some homes.  A really great place for on-line inspiration is the overstock.com art gallery.

I picked out my Stampscapes images first - 239D, 251C, 296C. Next, I went to work on my background.  I taped off  the edges of an A2 size piece of cardstock with a low tack tape - this worked for the boarder and for it keeping in place when I sponged.   I built color with a stylus, sponging my lightest color on first then adding depth with darker colors. NOTE: I did not fill in the color completely, leaving highlights. Also I was a bit heavy handed with the stylus in some spots  - that will be covered up later.

 

I stamped the trees in the distance in a green, using a mask of torn paper so it would not look like they were sitting on top of the ground. 

I colored with water-based markers and then stamped over the trees again after stamping off one time. This step was to add some of the detail back in.  I sponged a little color at the bottom of each tree for a shadow.

Next,  I removed the mask on the right side and bottom to allow the flowers to spill outside the boarder. For the flowers, I used a stencil from Donna Downey and gesso.   I added two coats of gesso. The first I coat, I dabbed through the stencil. when I saw it was not covering enough, I added a second coat. A idea just popped into my mind to create texture by squeezing the gesso directly from the bottle in a random squiggle. Now, I admit - I'm not sure if this was an orignal idea or if I saw it someplace in the hundreds of you tude videos I've seen and classes I've taken.  LOL!

 I used a brush to paint the flowers with acrylic paint.  TIP: before painting the flowers, I colored them in with a red water-baster marker as a base. This step allowed me to get right to the edge of the gesso over the texture. I really dig how they turned out!! I will use this technique again! It's funny how you accidently stumble upon something really cool  :o)  I added the black center  with a tooth pick, first spreading the black and then adding white dots and gently mixing.

I Need a Tropical Sunset!

 

With all this crazy weather we are having in the Midwest, I need a tropical sunset! I was happy to see this month's StampscapesII Challenge of  "Tropical." It also needs to have a bird,  animal or people in it.  I was inspired by a lovely photo I saw on Pinterest and tried to capture it here.  I made this colorful scene for my Stampin' Sister Trish D, who is across the world from me in Austrailia. 

I started by airbrushing the background inspired by the colors in the photo. Copic colors used: R08, R27, V06,  and V09. I masked the horizon line with a piece of paper.

 

Next, I used acrylic paint and a little piece of felt to dab in some clouds. Colors used: folkARt wicker white and metallic plum, Golden naphthol red light.

 

To color the foreground, I tore a piece of paper  as mask and pulled  Golden carbon black paint across the bottom with a little sponge.

 

 After it dried completely, I stamped the scene. Images used: 123F, 137C, 138C, 228A, 302A.  I used a white gel pen to give the water some highlights and also used a pen filled with black paint to fill in the land after I stamped the little people too far out into the water. :o) OOps!

Barn Scene

This  month's StampscapesII Challenge is  "Barnscape."  This scene features Kevin's large barn from his newest release and some lovely poppies from SweetnSassy.  The scene was inspired by my swap partner, as she has created scenes with this style of having a large image in the foreground. I was excited to get Barb G as my swap partner - and a little nervous. Her designs and coloring are always fabulous!  She's been published in RubberStampMadness several times.  Barb is also the one who introduced me to Encaustic painting. I was thinking I have to take my time on my design to make sure Barb is proud of me.

I stamped the poppies first and masked them, using a low tack tape for larger open areas. I didn't bother to mask the smaller areas as they have a design in them. If I did mask the smaller areas, I would use a liquid frisket mask - another great tip that Barb taught me!

Next, I stamped the barn and masked it before stamping the trees & ground. For any areas where I did not mask well - meaning there's a little halo, I used a multiliner to add a little detail.

 

Then, it was time for coloring!!  I used Copic Markers.  To make the barn look warn, after I colored it, I used the 0 marker to pull out some color.

A Sunset in the Country...Finishing a Scene

Do you have those - designs you start, but have not finished yet? :o)  "Finishing a scene" is  our Stampscapes yahoo group swap this month and I had lots of pieces to start with.  I started this scene sometime last year.  When I first added wax to the cardstock, I was thinking tropical, but after staring at the wax for a few minutes and exploring different ideas, I saw a sunset in the country. 

 To get the sharpest images, it's best to stamp before adding wax, however I have done lots pieces where I laid down wax first and then stamped. A few things to keep in mind is that, the stamp may slide on top of the wax and you will not get as crisp of an image. I have used a black permanent pen many a day to fill in. :o)

I first stamped some bushes on the dark ground, and then just stamped upside down for the reflection in the water. I also stamped a farm off in the distance.

 

Next I stamped the geese in the sky. For their reflection, I stamped them onto a piece of clear plastic, turned it over and pressed into the water. It gave a nice slightly blurry image - just like water.  To give the water a subtle movement, I stamped ripples using orange ink - stamping off each time.

Lastly, I stamped the ducks. I filled in areas I wanted to sharpen with a black artist pen,  drew thin lines for field, added some color with water-based markers and used a white paint pen to add white to areas. The very last thing I did was mail it to my stampin' sister Pia way in Sweden!

Tigers All Around Book Cover

When I started this layout, I did not have anything specific in mind....I knew I wanted to have a bunch of tigers because my husband really digs tigers - this book cover is for him.  I wasn't even sure it would turn out well enough to post so I did not take break out photos.  :o) I made a lot of mistakes in stamping the scene, but thanks to Kevin's awesome  Stampscapes designs, I could cover them up and like how it turned out.

I stamped the scene, masking where needed. Once the scene was complete, I used a liquid mask to protect all the eyes. I colored each tiger using YR24 and YR27.  Next, I colored the scene with subtle colors - water (B00), rocks (C1, C2), mountains e43), and cracked earth (W1).  I used a blending tool to lay down a variety of greens and browns all over the scene being careful to leave highlights. I didn't want to leave all the tiger's white areas stark white -  that was a little too loud, even for me. :o)

Before removing the liquid frisquet, I dabbed a tissue over it to remove any ink. I learned that trick from my stampin' sister Barb G who taught me all about using liquid frisquet while stamping. Before then I had only used it for watercoloring! All these tools overlap! :o) I colored all the tiger's eyes with markers and used glossy accents over the them. After the glossy accents dried, I put a tiny dot of white acrylic paint with a toothpick.

The rocks, cracked ground, mountains, reeds, palms, and sky images are all from Stampscapes. The tigers are from Coronado Island and I love rubber stamps. the plant on the bottom is from Serendipity.

Shout Out: This design was inspired by a design I did at the Stampscapes Retreat, which was inspired by my stampin' sister Marge that she did at the retreat.

Reflections

Last month the theme for our Stampscapes Yahoo group was Reflections.  

I chose this cute mini Magnolia to feature.  I bought several of the mini designs just to use with my Stampscapes images.  I created the scene during our Stampscapes retreat so I don't have break out photos. I'll do my best to describe my process.

I stamped him on cardstock and masked him. Next I stamped the peer. I made it into a dock by drawing in dock posts. :o) To create his reflection in the water, I stamped the little fisherman on the smooth side of the plastic that came with my stamp positioner. Since it is clear, it was easy to line it up with his feet and press lightly.   Next I masked the dock and stamped in the rest of the scene. I colored last, leaving highlights in the water and on the deck.  I also was careful not to color his reflection too bright. 

During our retreat we had the opporunty to get feedback from an Art Teacher, Grechen!  She gave me some great advice to deepen my colors in areas, like where the water is deeper.  The last three years, my roomies and I have been staying at Grechen's house and we didn't know she was an Art teacher. We were so excited to learn this  hidden talent about her and ask for her advice.  

When my little scene was all finished, I shipped it off to my stampin' sister Trish D in Australia.  I told her, the little fisherman was thinking "I hope Trish likes this card." :o)  She did!

Stampscapes Retreat 2013

Had a wonderful time last week in Savanna at the Stampscapes Retreat!! I spent a full creative, encouraging, fun-filled week with some of my Stampscapes Yahoo Group Sisters stamping away - coloring, giggling, painting, masking, air brushing, giggling, eating, fixing boo boos, and more coloring. What a wonderful way to spend a week!

New Stampscapes Images!

Kevin just released several new images! The new images are currently available as rubber only. This is how I've been buying stamps the last few years - less expensive and saves on storage!  A couple years ago I unmounted all my Stampin' Up! stamps. What a journey! :o) It was worth it!  I'm so glad they offer unmounted now.

First, I cut out all the images and then placed them on an adhesive backed mounting cling foam, EZ Mount, that I can use with my acrylic blocks.  EZ Mount is avilable in thick or thin. I prefer the thin, which comes in black. When I first decided to buy rubber only and place them on mounting foam, I bought a hot knife - not that expensive and well worth it!

 

After I cut them all out, I used a white gel pen to write the image number on the back, making sure it was in the upright direction of the image. Some image shapes are more obvious than others - I have stamped an image upside down. :o) I allowed them to dry 24 hours before I put them away. 

  

I can fit all my SS images into one very large binder using stamp storage panels.  It has a storage area where I can fit my inspiration cards.  I use a permanent maker to note the image numbers on the panels.  I found that if I needed to  "erase" the white gel pen or permanent marker on the panels, StazOn cleaner works. 

When I first started buying the images, I printed a catalog checklist from the Stampscapes site. I put the pages  into sheet protectors.  I organize my images bascially by size, and fill in images where I have space. I can't always remember the image number, but I can remember if it's small or large. :o)  For the new images, I just slipped the image sheets that came with the rubber into sheet protectors. 

 Now that I have the new images mounted, I'll have to design something with them!

Where the Buffalo Roam

I am making a variety pack of American Indian themed greeting cards and wanted to capture a scene with a buffalo.  Of course, when I think of scenes, I think of Stampscapes! :o)

1. Inked up buffalo with black ink pad and stamped onto semi-glossy cardstock.
2. Masked the buffalo and stamped the grass. Note: I left his feet un-masked so it would like he was standing in the grass. I also stamped off for the grass a little further back in the scene.
3. Next, I masked the land and a horizon line - I didn't try to make  perfectly straight lines, I just didn't want to go to far- and stamped the water pattern..
4. I then masked the top of the water and stamped trees along the horizon line.
5. I removed all masks and let the coloring begin! I colored the buffalo first using Tombows. I also used a marker to add color to the tree trunks and branches.
6. For the rest of the coloring, I used a stylus and ink pads. I like to use a variety of greens and blues. I left light areas for highlights.
7. I used the darker blue to add clouds to the sky for a dramatic sky.   I learned this technique from Kevin at a Stampscapes retreat. What a wonderful time we had!

Colorful Sailing

I tried this card both ways - stamped first, then added color .... colored first, then stamped. I found I like to color first. Either way is fine, it's a matter of preference. I had the layout in mind and just filled in color on the blank card stock.  Here's what I did:

1. Starting with the lightest color, filled in the sky and add a small amount on the lower portion - the water.  I filled in additional colors, using a curved stroke in the sky. I got this idea from my Stampin' Brother, Joe. His skies and water have a lot of movement. He's also the one who introduced me to PanPastels. Oh, another wonderful way to color! Oh! There's so many!! I digress :o).... back to this card - I decided to leave the streaks in there - it looks like movement.
2. Next I filled in the water, working horizontally and outside-in, and leaving a highligh area. I added a darker red on the edges.  I had a few spots where I bounced the stylist, but I didn't worry, I knew I would cover them up. :o)  It's not how perfect it turns out the first time, it's how well we can cover up our boo boos! :o)
3. Now time for stamping!! I stamped the water first, going right up to the horizon line that I made with color. Next came the sail boat last and the trees. After looking at it, I decided to add some dark blue along the horizon to give the illusion of land way off in the distance.
4. I added black around the lower edges and used a white gel pen to add some dots for interest.

Stampscapes - One scene, Two Techniques

I'm so excited to share that Kevin Nakagawa of Stampscapes made these two scenes I created into a Stampscapes Idea card!!

 

When I was at the Stampscapes Retreat, I was reminded by my stampin' sister Barb G of how much I enjoy Encausic painting. I have to admit, I go from one coloring tool/medium to the next and I truly enjoy each and every one!! :o) My favorite is the one I'm using at the time - it really is!!  I'm sharing one scene I created with two different coloring techniques.

Scene 1: Encaustic Wax Painting

1. Inked up Palm Cluster 100D with black ink pad and stamped onto glossy card stock.
2. Spread wax with iron, using palms as a guide to separate the sky and water. Using the wax, I created a little land mass way off in distance.
3. Inked up Seaside Cove sm. 308G with orange ink pad and stamped, lining it up with the bottom of the palms.  Inked up and stamped a second time. NOTE: when stamping over wax, the wax is slippery and acts similar to a resist, so you image will not be dark.
4. Inked up Solo Canoeist 159A with black ink pad and stamped. Used black marker to darken.
5. Inked up Gulls 302A with black ink pad and stamped. Used black marker to darken.
6. Inked up Frond #2 137C with black ink pad and stamped, Repeated several times around top of scene. Used a sponge to pick up black acrylic paint and apply onto 137C and stamped. Repeated several times around top of scene.

Scene 2: Tombow Dual Brush Pen Technique

1. Inked up Palm Cluster 100D with black ink pad and stamped onto card stock.
2. Scribbled yellow 025 marker on non-stick surface. Spritzed with water and swirled card stock through color. Note: leave some white areas. Wiped off non-stick surface before each new color.
3. Repeat for orange 925. Repeat for red 856.
4. Allow to dry. Can use heat tool to speed up drying process. 
5. Used water brush to pick up some red off non-stick surface and painted in a land mass.
6. Inked up Seaside Cove sm. 308G with orange ink pad and stamped, lining it up with the bottom of the palms.
7. Inked up Solo Canoeist 159A with black ink pad and stamped.
8. Inked up Gulls 302A with black ink pad and stamped.
9. Inked up Frond #2 137C with black ink pad and stamped, Repeated several times around top of scene.

Stamps: Stampscapes  100D, 137C, 159A, 308G, 302A  
Paper: Scene1: Encaustic Creations glossy card stock,  Stampin' Up! black. Scene 2:  Cryogen White, Stampin' Up! black.

Ahhhh....Relaxing at the Lake

A few weeks ago, we went to my son's girlfriend's grandparent's house on the lake [oops-I may have broken an apostrophe limit. :o)].  We had such a lovely time with the whole family [waving Hi to my Battle Creek BFF Kathy!!]! I made this card to capture the nice memory and say thank you to Val's grandparents for being such wonderful hosts, feeding us and taking us around the lake in the boat (I went two times!). :o)

1. Inked up the chair with black ink pad and stamped it first onto Cryogen card stock. Applied liquid frisquet to the chair and let it dry. This is my new favorite way to mask!! This is so much better than trying to cut out little skinny pieces and then place the mask just so perfect on top of the image!
2. Inked up Lakeside Cove image with black ink and stamped.
3. Used a blending tool to apply shades of yellow and green to the grass area. Inked up grass image with darkest green and stamped several times, re-inked when ran out.
4. I laid a paper towel to mask rocks and airbrushed sky, using a cloud template.
5. Airbrushed water.
6. Time to remove the mask. Before removing, I dabbed the wet color off with a tissue. I used an adhesive remove to gently easy the mask off.
7. Time for coloring!!  All the markers I used are in the picture below.  My Spectrum Noir Markers fit right into my Copic Airbrush system. Oh, so many colors!! :o)  I'm such a coloring geek!
8. Last touch - stamped birds in the sky.

Paper:  Curious Metallic CRYOGEN WHITE 89lb card stock , Stampin' Up! basic black, Neenah Classic Solar White
Inks: Spectrum Noir Markers, Memento tuxedo black ink pad, Distress ink pads shabby shutter, forest moss, scattered straw
Accessories: Pebeo liquid frisquet, paintbrush, Tim Holtz blending tool, Stampin' Up! adhesive remover, cloud template (SU! retired)
