Water-colored Ocean Scene

I made this little scene for someone special.  It's actually two greeting cards.

 

The cards are for a  leader in our organization who is retiring. I'm happy for her, sad for us...  We needed two large greeting cards to pass around the office. I painted one scene across two pieces of 5x7" hot press water-color paper.

I layered them on 8.5 x 11" cardstock folded in half, so that when the two cards are butted up together, they form the one scene. 

 

Shoutout: the tropical scene was inspired by this video from thefrugalcrafter.

Painting Inspired by Donna Downey

The art pieces I'm sharing today were inpired by one of Donna's Canvus Create designs she shared this year. I just love her enengy and how she shows her art work evolving.

I started with the idea that I would make one greeting card, buidling color for the background.

I had so much fun paintings the greeting card backgrounds, I decided to expand to an ATC and a canvus! :o) I painted the flowers with gesso.

I finished the painting using Donna's techniques she shares in her workshop video. It was so much fun and I'm happy with how all the pieces turned out!

Getting Reacquainted with Wax

When I went to the Stampscapes retreat this year, my stampin' sister Barb G rekindled my love for wax. :o)  I'm trying different styles and just having fun! I have once again taken over the kitchen counter.

I stamped the images first and then added the wax in sections.  One of the joys of using wax is the surprising outcome. If you are not happy with it, you can reheat it and create a different design. I can honestly say I have not discarded one piece of card stock I put wax on. Now I have reheat many, but discarded none. :o)

Butterflies Resist

I made this card for my Club Posh swap bud this month, Kimi in CA. Worked in a few fun techniques.

Prepared the background. Inked up butterfly background image with watermark ink pad, and stamp onto Cryogen card stock. Sprinkle with clear embossing powder and heat set.. On a non-stick surface, I laid down color direct from ink pads - being careful not to overlap. Spritzed with water.  NOTE: When I do this, I make several backgrounds at one time

Picked up color on the background by lightly swirling it around in the ink. If you want, you can take a clean paper towel and gently buff away color on the embossed sections. I did not do that on my images. I like the subtle color. Allowed to dry. 

 

Next, I inked up tulip image and single butterfly image with white craft ink, stamped onto vellum card stock, sprinkled with white embossing powder and heat set. As I did for the background, I laid down color direct from ink pads on a non-stick surface, I used a paintbrush to pick up color and paint the backside of the embossed vellum. Allowed to dry.

  

I then cut out the butterfly and tulips and ran them through my Xyron sticker maker. TIP: the Xyron allows for full coverage of adhesive on vellum, so it does not show through.  Adhered all my layers and it was ready to send to Kimi.

I also took a photo before I added the butterfly and tulips. I think the card is pretty with just that background technique - there's such lovely detail in the image, with enough open space to pick up some of that beautiful color from the inks.

A Splash of Fall

All the pretty autumn colors are starting to show on the trees in my area.  For last month's swap at our StampscapesII Group, I made this card that shows a splash of color.  Click here for general tips on scenic stamping.

1. I stamped the boats and dock first, and built everything else around them.
2. Next I stamped 212G across the lake and then filled in on the sides.
3. I used a torn paper towel to mask. I learned that trick (and many, many - many more from Sandy H!)
4. After my ink dried completely, I started to add color with my Copics. I colored the water first, then the boats and dock.  Added color to the trees and grass, using various colors of green to give depth.  Added a splash of fall yellows and oranges to a few of the trees.
5. After adhering the layers, I added glitter,  Stickles and pearls to add splashes of color and a little bling on the ground (learned that trick from Trish H).

Hambo Hoedown 18

This project features one of Hambo Stamps new adorable fruit/veggie children. They can be found in New-Additions at the Hambo Digi site. 

1. Used the Paint application on my PC to cut the words away from the TIF file I received. I  saved it as a separate file.  I wanted to have more room to cut around it.
2. To print the images, I inserted the digi images into my word.doc application.  TIP: The first time you print, print it on copy paper. Check to make sure it is the size you want.  When you are sure the size you want,  then print on your nice card stock.
3. As soon as I saw the image, I knew what design paper I wanted to use - Papertrey Ink's new release includes the cutest fruit design paper. I matched the colors of markers to the paper.
4. I used two or three colors from a color family to add color to the images. Because the strawberry is such a large area to color, I used four markers - R21, R24, R27, R29.
5. For the background layer of the image and the work sentiment, I cut them out using die cuts, left the die cut in and used the airbrush system to add color with a boarder. NOTE: When you use markers over your die cuts, you can clean them off with alcohol.
6. Adhered all layers.
7. Added a strip of design paper inside.

When Are These Kids Moving Out of My House?

As much as we love our children,  now and then, we mothers wonder when are these kids moving out of our house?!  :o)  We love them, we nurture them, we encourage them, and we teach them to be independent, contributing citizens - so they will move out and we can have our house back. I made this little scene for this month's Art Impressions card contest  - "A Tribute To Mom."

1. Stamp poor mom image.
2. Mask mom and then stamp kitchen image.
3. Use two or three colors from a color family to add color to the images. I used the sepia pen  
   to color the detail of mom's chair.
4. Use scissors and craft knife to cute above the floor line of the kitchen image. Adhere over design paper.
5. Cut layers so they are nested.
6. I created the sentiment using my PC and printed out.
7. Use black marker to color just the calendar part of the kitchen image and stamp inside for note.

Stipple Butterfly

This is one of my favorite cards I made at the retreat.  I used the stippling technique to create the blue blended background for this lovely butterfly image, which I embossed and colored with Copics and a gold pen. My stampin' sister Trish showed me the proper way to stipple. :o)  I have not picked up a brush for quite some time, and when I saw her beautiful scenes, I had to know how she did it. She showed me what she did - she stayed in one place long enough for the color to fill in. I was speed stippling. :o) Thank you Trish H!

Hambo Bouncing Bunnies Baby Card

This baby card features a Hambo Stamps digi design. I really dig Hambo designs because they are so versatile and so much fun to color!

1. Print medium size bunnies image on design paper  for the image to color, and print small size again on lower left hand side of white card stock paper.    Note:  I use the Power Point application to insert a digi image into a file for printing.  I printed a few sizes of the bunnies image on both white and design paper.  I sized one smaller and printed in the lower left hard corner. Cut white card stock to A2 size, and then trim 1/4" inch off top and side.. 
2. On the design paper , color each bunny's belly, nose, shoes, and ears with markers.  Repeat color pattern on little bunnies' bellies, noses and ears.
3. Cut rectangle around image on design paper.
4. Cut layers of orchid and design paper each slightly larger.
5. Adhere ribbon around largest layer design paper and then adhere to  base card. Adhere all layers.
6. On inside of card adhere white card stock with little bunnies. Adhere a strip of design paper.

Fall In The Midwest

This card features Perfect Pearls Mist background and also Papertrey Ink's lovely fall design paper.  See here for more information on this beautiful sparkling Mist - made up of Perfect Pearls, re-inkers and water by Tim Holtz.

1. Spritz mist onto yellow A2 size card stock. Set aside to dry.
2. Color basket stamp image direct with water based marker and stamp onto watercolor paper.  Spread color sparingly with water brush.  To see more on this technique, visit Art Impressions.
3. Color directly onto flower image, which I'm using as a leaf image, with various markers and stamp onto water color paper. Spread color sparingly with water brush. Repeat for at least four images, depending on how many leaves you want around the base of your trees.
4. Cut images out - cut leaves in different shapes. Run through a sticker maker.
5. Ink up tree image with black ink pad and stamp onto misted background. Fill in trees with black marker. Add highlights with white pen.
6. Trim card stock to allow enough room for basket on one side of card. Note: I'm not one to measure exactly. :o) This one is cut to 4" x 3 7/8".
7. Cut piece of leaf design paper to A2 size and trim 1/4" off top and one side. Use corner punch to punch out design corners on design paper and also on misted card stock.
8. Adhere basket and leaves under trees. Put some of the leaves "in" the basket.
9. Adhere the ribbon onto the design paper. Adhere the design paper onto the base card and the image piece on top of that.
10. Add Dew Drops.
11. For the inside of the card, cut a small piece of design paper and adhere to some vanilla card stock. Use corner punch to punch out design corners.

Butterfly over a Clear Sky

  

Sharing another card using my new favorite blending technique I learned from Kevin of Stampscapes. This time with shades of blue and the gorgeous Michael Strong Butterfly image. Please click here for complete instructions. I used the #10 blue to stamp the texturizng image across the card.  I really like how the texturizing image showed on this one!

I worked on two at the same time.  I liked this background and the butterfly image from the other one I was working on. I cut out the butterfly from the other one and put it on this background. Of course, I saved the rest of the other background for another use "someday." :o)

Hummingbird over a Midwest Fall Sky

The idea for this background is that you are building color by blending with a light touch. Click here to see the original post I did with this technique. 

1. Choose four shades of a color family for your background. Starting with the lightest color, load up ink on the foam tip.  From the outside edge and with a very light touch, pull stylist across card stock towards you.  Keep your foam tip well inked.
2. Turn your card and continue to pull color towards you. Ink up tip often.     
3. Go to the next darker shade of color and repeat. Don't go as far in so you'll be able to see the gradation. 
4. Go to the third color and repeat.
5. On the forth color stay near the edge, depending on how dark you want your scene.  If it is not getting as dark as you want, try black as a fifth color.  
6. Ink up the distress image with your lightest shade, or medium shade, and stamp starting from one corner. Ink up and stamp again. 
7. Continue inking and stamping the image on the entire piece of card stock. Before the next step, make sure your ink is completely dry.  You can use a heat tool to speed up the drying process. 
8. Ink up the hummingbird image with craft black, stamp image, sprinkle with black emboss powder and heat set.
9. Adhere layers.

Fresh Fruit in a Lovely Bowl

I'm featuring Mike Strong's cloisonne pot image again! :o)  It's so versatile!  This time I filled it with fresh Spellbinders fruit.  For the bowl, I used a polished stone background I had previously made.

1. To create the polished stone background with die ink re-inkers, saturate a large cotton ball with   alcohol (very moist, not dripping). Squeeze three drops of each colored re-inker onto the cotton ball randomly. Squeeze two drops of the gold re-inker, apart from each other. Dab the cotton ball randomly around the glossy card stock. The alcohol makes the ink spread. If there’s too much ink in one spot, dab over the spot again to spread the ink. Dab over areas until you get the effect you want.  Tip: Because a  little goes a long way, use at least a 5 ½” x 8 ½” sheet of card stock at a time. If you dab too much, you’ll get a big blob.
2. When using water based metallic inks with this technique, a fixative is needed to set the ink completely. Spray a fixative lightly over the card stock.  Allow several minutes to dry.
3. Ink up the pot image with gold ink and stamp on card stock. Sprinkle with emboss powder and heat set.
4. Cut out the pot. Cut off the top of the pot to create a lovely bowl. 
5. Use die cuts to create fruit shapes.
6. While the card stock is still in the die cut, airbrush color onto the fruit.  I used yellow for the base of the pear and apples and then added the red and green. I used the darker green for the leaves.
7. After removing the die cut, color the steams direct. You can use alcohol to remove color from your die cut pieces.
8. Cut design paper to fit A2 size card, and then cut 1/4" off top and one side.
9. Trim around the design paper with gold pen. Allow several minutes to dry.
10. Arrange fruit in bowl to your liking.
11. Adhere design paper onto base card, and fruit and bowl on top.

Stampscapes & Blending

   

Since the retreat, I've really been into scenic stamping. :o)  I'm sharing two cards I did using Kevin's Stylus Tool/Color streaks technique with a stylus tool and dye ink pads. To see Kevin's step by step directions, click here. He gets some amazing results!  I'm still practicing. :o)

The idea here is that you are building color by blending with a light touch. Be patient as your color comes in. I first learned this technique on semi-glossy card stock- which I love the look! Last week Sandy H told me about using Cryogen card stock - a smooth card stock with a beautiful metallic base - with this technique. I love this results too!!  As you build your color, remember to leave some white space. It can be in the center, off center, to the left, to the right - it's your artistic choice depending on the results you are looking for. For example, if you are doing a water scene, you'll want to leave light in the sky and then in the water to show a reflection of what's in the sky. Kevin has some really good examples - click here and then select his pages.

Choose four shades of a color family for your background.  NOTE:  When using the stylus tool, you can reuse the foam tips in color families.  I have a lot of handles with the color families all lined up.  Other people have just a couple handles and change their foam tips as they use different colors. They are easy to pop on and off. I put them in a plastic baggie to store them.

1. Starting with the lightest color, load up ink on the foam tip.  From the outside edge and with a
     very light touch, pull stylist across card stock towards you.  Keep your foam tip well inked.  If you get ovals, circles or half circles, you are applying too much pressure. Save your card stock if this happens! You can cover it later  up when you stamp. :o)
2. Turn your card and continue to pull color towards you. Ink up tip often.  Variation:  You can also dip your foam tip directly into ink. This is actually how Kevin showed us at the retreat. Having so much ink on the tip really provides you with smooth stroking. I'll show examples with this variation in the future. I can only do so many techniques in a day. Darn! If I didn't have to work, sleep, and eat, I could get in more! :o)
3. Go to the next darker shade of color and repeat. Don't go as far in so you'll be able to see the gradation.
4. Go to the third color and repeat.
5. On the forth color stay near the edge, depending on how dark you want your scene. If it is not  getting as dark as you want, try black as your fourth color. 
6. Ink up cloud image with your lightest color and stamp starting from one corner. Ink up and stamp again slightly overlapping the first impression. This is where you can cover up any le boo boo impressions from the foam tip. :o) NOTE: One of the really nice features of Stampscapes Images is that they work together so nicely. I did not do any masking for these cards.  I inked the center of the image - I did not go to the edge.
7. Continue inking and stamping the cloud on the entire piece of card stock.
8. For the pine tree image (Gina K card stock), I inked up the image in the darkest blue and stamped off on scrap paper then onto the card stock. Repeat across the scene. Ink up in black and stamp full on. Repeat across the scene.
9. For the bare tree image (on Cryogen card stock), I inked up the image in a medium shade color and stamped. Repeated across the scene.  I repeated with the white. After it dried, I finished with black.
10. To finish your scene add "stars" with a white pen.
11. Adhere layers and sign your name on the front of your little art piece!

Greta is from Rubbernecker!  Isn't she classy?!  I wanted to keep the background simple so she would just pop out.

1. Ink up image with black ink and stamp on stampers select white card stock.
2. Color image blending two or more markers from the same color family into an area.
3. Cut out image. Use craft knife for tight areas.
4. Use die cut for the oval layer. Cut piece of design card stock to fit bottom third of A2 base.   Add a little color with a gray marker for a ground she will stand on. Adhere layers and image.
5. Add sparkle to her earring and bracelet with the glitter pen. Allow to dry, add another layer.
6. On an A2 size piece of white card stock, ink up part of image stamp off, then stamp in the corner. Add sparkle to her earring and bracelet with the glitter pen. Trim 1/4" on one side and top. Adhere to inside of card for the message.

Thank you from the Plumber

This delightful plumber is from I Brake for Stamps.  I entered a contest they were having to name a new line of humorous senior images. They liked the name I proposed for this cute senior - Got Poop? :o)  I received him in the mail this week. I had fun coloring him!  At first, I thought how am I going to get to all his tools? After I got going, I found it easy with the brush tip of the Copics markers. I really dig those markers!!

1. Ink up image with black ink and stamp on stampers select white card stock. 
2. Color image blending two or more markers from the same color family into an area.
3. After you color the blue jeans, moisten denim fabric with colorless blender solution and light press onto jeans.  The solution 'pulls color out' leaving the pattern from the fabric.
4. Cut out image. Use craft knife for tight areas.
5. Add "lenses" to his eye glasses with the glaze pen. Allow to dry, add another layer. Repeat one more time.
6. Use die cuts for your oval layers.  Adhere layers and image. Add a little color with a gray marker for a ground the plumber will stand on.  TIP: Whenever I have something to adhere that is an odd shape, or very small, I like to use a sticker machine to make sure I get coverage. A liquid adhesive is also good for this - just be careful not to put too much, too close to the edge, or it will squish out when you press down.  I know from experience. :o)  Les boo boos....

Thank you for your Hospitality....Sorry About Your House

Whenever our relatives come to visit two things happen....

Thing1) Something is broken when they leave.  Once it was the vacuum cleaner (it was nice of my brother-in-law to vacuum). Another time it was the garbage disposal.  And to be fair, we've done our share of damage too.... I broke my sister-in-law's blinds. My son got red ink on Grammie's new couch.

Thing2) Someone always, always forgets something - a sock, a whole bag of dirty clothes, a toothbrush, etc... We collect everything in a bag and save it for the next time they visit, or take it to them when we go visit them.  Although, I did wash that bag of dirty clothes....didn't want to save that. :o)   It has become a contest at our house.  We wave good-bye from the drive way. Go in the house to the window on the side and wave from there. Then we break up and start looking. Who ever finds a forgotten item yells out what he or she found. Then we call them on the cell phone and say "guess what I found?" There's no prize, just bragging rights. :o)

We're always glad to have company and to visit our family. The visits make great stories. Member -not remember, but "member" - that time.... :o)

I had so much fun making this card - I was gigglin' with every piece.  Sending a shout out to my daughter for the idea of having stuffing coming out of the pillow. That may be from a past experience she participated in....

1. Lightly drag the gray ink pad direct to paper over textured card stock.
2. Cut couch & chair out with die cut.
3. Ink up chair outline image with black ink and stamp onto die cut - since the image is clear, you can easily see where to stamp. Repeat for the couch. Note: I tried it the other way, stamp first, die cut second.  That did not work for me. The die cut moved slightly as it was going through my Cuttlebug machine.   If anyone has any tips on this, please leave a comment.
4. Ink up picture image and stamped onto scrap white card stock. Repeat for two more pictures.  Repeat for open image of pillows (3 of each square and circle) and lamp.
5. Add color with markers.  I used just one marker from each color family and then used the colorless blender 0 to pull color out for the shading.  This technique works beautifully with the PTI select white card stock. 
6. Cut out the images.  The small punch works just right for the round pillows.
7. Run all the images through the Xyron sticker maker.  Save one pillow that will be adhered with a dimensional.
8. On an A2 size layer of white card stock, draw a base board with the multiliner and a ruler.  Add color with marker. Use colorless blender 0 to pull some color out. Run the marker back and forth in short horizontal lines to create a faux wood grain.
9. Add color to floor with gray marker.
10. Cut off one leg from the couch and chair to give the appearance they are broken. Adhere couch and chair.
11. Ink up table image and stamp in between couch and chair.
12. Adhere pillows and pictures.  Before adhering lamp, cut the lampshade off so you can place it lopsided. 
13. Draw a little outlet and a cord from the lamp.
14. Tear off a corner of your pillow that you did not run through the Xyron. Use the dimensional to adhere a piece of cotton and pillow on the floor.
15. Ink up coffee cup and stamp onto floor.  Add colors and a little spill with markers.
16. Ink up sentiment and stamp. Change words with multiliner.
17. On the inside of the card ink up chair and stamp in the corner. Adhere a pillow. Ink up sentiment and stamp.

Sunset at the Lake

This card was inspired by a card Sandy did here.  She even shared the photo, and I am too!  Sandy is such a talented artist - she has two blogs!  She is also a great teacher. She teaches at My Creative Classroom. She has a beginners scenic class starting July 6th - you can see it here. 

Here's what I did to make this card:

1. Print photo on photo paper, allow to dry. Like Sandy, I turned the photo upside down so that clouds would be the water.
2. Stamp Mountains with black ink. Allow ink to dry in between each image.
3. Stamp cabin with black ink.  Be sure to make it low enough so that the reflection is in the "water"
4. Stamp birds and branches with black ink.  Stamp the boat last. My husband actually suggested the boat when I showed him the card. :o) Nice touch!
5. Add color to the rocks, cabin, and roof directly with markers.
6. Add color to the mountains with the stylist and caramel ink. Color some areas darker than others, allowing the color of the photo to show through for highlights. Since the sun is to the left, color the right side of the mountains darker.
7. Add color to the trees with the stylist and artichoke ink. Also a little color in the water for the reflection of the tress.
8. I stamped the row boat on the inside of the card for an itty bitty surprise. :o)

Plum Flowers

Created an elegant card today with plum and gold.

1. Stamp the trio flower image with gold ink, sprinkle embossing power and heat set.
2. Add color to flowers with markers by coloring in small circles. Use the lightest marker to add color to the stems.
3. Punch out image in rectangle.
4. Cut design paper to desired size and adhere. Before adhering to the base card, wrap ribbon around edge.
5. Adhere embossed image to front and add Dew Drops.

Herringbone Technique Bunny

Tried a new technique today! It's called the Herringbone Technique. It's all about the paper.  

1. Select four different color coordinated papers or card stock. This example uses two solid and two patterned.
2. Cut into A2 size pieces.  Cut ½” strips of each piece length wise.  The technique allows you to also cut a variety of widths or all the same width.
3. Apply adhesive to the 4¼” x 5½” white card stock.  In this project, the Xyron machine was used   to apply the adhesive.  Remove the protective paper from the sticky surface on the card stock.
4. On the sticky side, build the background, the Herringbone Technique, by forming “V’s.” Match up ends and go the opposite direction of the previous piece laid down to create a “V.”  Trim pieces after building each side and use shorter strips on   other sides.  Trim final piece to size desired.
5. Create a pattern with the colors (see photo).
6. Stamp bunny image on white card stock. Stamp bunny image again on design paper. Line him up so that the egg is over a pattern on the design paper.
7. Color bunny on white card stock with markers. Cut bunny out.
8. For the design paper image, cut around bunny’s hands to get just the egg piece. 
9. Adhere cut out egg over bunny image you colored.
10. Cut oval out of design paper and adhere colored bunny onto oval. 
11. Adhere all layers.  
12. For the inside, stamp bunny on white card stock so it looks like he’s peeking over the bottom of the card.  Adhere cardstock to inside of card.
