I created two art pieces using all three fabulous stencils in the May set called "Sand and Sea," designed by Carolyn Dube.

We met in StencilClub. When we get together on the phone we talk about about how much we enjoy creating, sharing and being part of Stencil Club - we all talk at the same time and just laugh and giggle. I've shared many projects using stencils from StencilGirl and have also shared photos and fun from workshops with the beautiful and talented MaryBeth Shaw, owner of StencilGirl Products.
To create the sailboat greeting card, I started with a twist on a technique I learned from MaryBeth (I used the original technique in my second piece). I used the 6x6" stencil and a glass texture paste to create dimension on watercolor paper. NOTE: be sure to clean your stencils right away after using any kind of texture paste.
After it dried completely, I spritzed it with water then dripped luscious liquid metal colors. This was my first time using the Metallics and I dripped a bit too much. I tilted the paper piece and dripped color onto a blank piece of water color paper and pressed another piece on top of that. I dabbed color around them with a paper towel. I also used the paper towel to dab up some of the color on the texture piece. I laid it between two more pieces of cardstock - I had way to too much color. You only need a few drops.
The metallic colors are so rich with color - in additional to my focal piece I got four backgrounds. :)
I used the large 9x12" stencil to create the rolling sea on my gelli plate. I also used the gelli plate and cloud die cuts for the sky.
The sailboat stamp, die cut and sentiment are from Simon Says Stamps and Die Set OCEAN DREAMS Splash of Color. Check out that cool texture on the sailboat!
For the journal cover, I used techniques that I learned in a workshop I took with MaryBeth. We created a cool little techniques booklet, which made it easy for me to remember. NOTE: I removed the elastic cord from the journal.
I laid the book flat and gesso'd the whole cover using a card to spread.
While it dried, I gathered some collage papers, including some I made inspired by techniques from the workshop using the 4x4" and 6x6" stencil.
After the cover dried completely, I spread the first layer in blocks of color. I only used two colors (inspired by MaryBeth :)) mixing them together and also white and black gesso. At this point, I did not have a plan - I just laid down some color.
For the next layer, I used the large 9x12" stencil and white gesso.
I walked away and came back three times before the idea came to me of what to do next. :) For the next layer, I used a low tack tape to mask off the block sections and added patterns with the 6x6" and 4x4" stencils with variations of the same paint colors. For a finished look, different size black paint markers & a ruler separated and framed the sections. I varied the size of lines for interest and used the bottom of a dauber to make some circles with gold paint. I just had to use one stamp. :) I picked a cool circle one from Seth Apter's designs dipped in a gold ink pad.
The vivid, textured circles were made using one of my new favorite techniques I learned from MaryBeth's workshop and the 6x6" stencil. Click here to see details. The circles not only add a pop of design, they also cover up any booboos you may want to hide. :) I edged cover with a black paint pen.
On the inside cover I created the first page using more techniques from my little stencil book and included the collage papers I created earlier.
