Getting Reacquainted with Wax

When I went to the Stampscapes retreat this year, my stampin' sister Barb G rekindled my love for wax. :o)  I'm trying different styles and just having fun! I have once again taken over the kitchen counter.

I stamped the images first and then added the wax in sections.  One of the joys of using wax is the surprising outcome. If you are not happy with it, you can reheat it and create a different design. I can honestly say I have not discarded one piece of card stock I put wax on. Now I have reheat many, but discarded none. :o)

1. Inked up mini tree image with watermark ink pad and stamped onto white glossy card stock. 
   Repeated five  times.  Sprinkled embossing power and heat set.
2. Mask a moon with a circle. Used torn paper to mask hills for snow.  I used B23 to air-brush the snow, and B24 to air-brush the sky.
3. Used die cuts to cut out trees
4. Used craft knife to cut small slits in the snow hills.
5. Adhered trees.
6. Used glitter pen to add snow.
7. Used stamp positioner to line up sentiment image and stamp.
8. Tied ribbons.

Toothbrush Background

 

I made this card for Michael Strong's November card challenge at his Yahoo Group.  This card fits into a USA legal size envelop.  The  background was inspired by a technique in Sherrill Kahn's book Creative Stamping With Mixed Media Techniques.   I really dig Sherrill's bold use of color and style.

1. Cut 3" of the top of 8 1/2" x 11" piece of card stock. Fold over the largest section so that you have a card 4 x 8 1/2".  The 3" x 8 1/2" piece is the back ground layer.
2. Squirt a small amount of paint onto the background layer and then spread with toothbrush in diagonal strokes.  Repeat for the other two colors until you have completely covered the piece of card stock. Allow to dry. Clean toothbrush right away with water.   NOTE: I used only a small amount of cooper in the background.
3. Squirt small amount of copper paint onto sponge and then dab onto mini square image. Stamp onto toothbrush background. Repeat to fill the background. Allow to dry.
4. Cut a square piece of black card stock.  Use a sponge to apply copper paint to word image and stamp. Repeat for the mini square image. Allow to dry. Be sure to clean your stamps right away with water.
5. Edge square with sponge.  Allow to dry.
6. Adhere all layers.

October Club Scrap Jr. Kit

I am a member of Club Scrap and get the most beautiful variety of  papers, card stock, stencils and rubber every single month.  This month I used supplies from the kit to make this lovely card and also used one of Mike's images. This card measures 5 1/4 " x 5 1/4".

1. I taped the stencil down on an area of design card stock.  NOTE: I strategically placed the stencil down to make sure the part of the design on the card stock I wanted would be on my finished card.
2. Dabbed paint all over the stencil.  Carefully lifted stencil and pulled off tape. I immediately rinsed the stencil off and used a soft brush to clean it while the water was running on it.
3. After the card stock dried, I cut the square that I wanted.
4. Then dabbed paint around the border. Allowed it to dry.
5. Dabbed paint onto rubber image and stamped onto card stock. I immediately cleaned the rubber with water.
6. After image dried, cut it out with scissors.
7. Stamped a few images on a piece of white cards stock for the inside of card.
8. Adhered everything together.

October: National Breast Cancer Awareness Month

 

You know it's October when you see NFL players wear bright pink!  I love to see it!! Commercials on TV, adds to remind women to take care of themselves, and lots of opportunity to support a worthy cause.

1. Inked up image with brown ink and stamped onto white card stock. Repeated on second sheet of card stock.
2. Inked up image again, focusing on the skirt,  and stamped onto design paper. On the second image, I inked up the mini  shell  image and stamped to add a design to her scarf and one of   the fabric rolls.  Repeat several times for the pattern you want.  NOTE: I stamped off each time to create a  subtle pattern.
3. Colored the portions of image that I was not planning cover up with pieces of design paper/card stock. I did color a base coat for the patterned fabric roll - to make sure I had a back-fill in case I missed any little pieces.  Color the image using two or three markers in a color family for shading.  When you have a large area, I find three shades work best. For smaller areas, I use two. For her eyes, I used a black mulitliner to fill in her pupils, leaving a small white space. Then used a brown marker for the rest of color. After it dried, I used the same brown marker to color just a little portion on the left side of each eye ball to give it dimension.
4. Cut out my main image and all the pieces.
5. Adhered full image  to base card.
6. I put small dabs of liquid adhesive on the part of the base image for the pieced fabric roll and skirt, and then placed each piece in place and press lightly. TIP: For this this technique, liquid adhesive works best because it allows you some time to move your pieces of paper around to fit perfectly over your base image.  Dab glue inside your image, not at the edge. When you press down on the designer paper, the adhesive will spread. If it does spread beyond the edge, just wipe it off.  For more information about this technique, called paper piecing, click here to see a post I did with details on how to do this.
7. I stamped the her ribbon on, colored it, and used a glitter pen to add a splash of sparkle to her jewelry.  
8. For the inside of the card, I used  a scrap piece of paper to mask and then spread color in the open area of the base card.
9. For the letters, I inked up each one with VeraMark ink then inked up with pink and stamped onto scrap white card stock.  Next I sprinkled embossing powder , heat set and adhered them over the pink area.
10. I stamped a couple images on the inside, and as you can see I like to stamp the back of my cards too!

A Distressed Fleur-de-lis

I made this card for our Michael Strong Yahoo Group challenge.   Hetty, our group leader, gave us the layout. 

1. The first thing I did was picked out my colors. 
2. Inked up texture  image with  distress ink pad,  stamped on card stock, sprinkled embossing powder. Repeated for a random design. Heat set.
3. Repeated for each color.
4. Inked up Fleur-de-lis image , stamped on white scrap piece of card stock, sprinkle with embossed powder and heat set.
5. Use die cut to cut out image. TIP: I learned this tip from my Stampin' Sister Judy at Mike's Yahoo group. Using a scrap piece card stock ( a color different than what you stamped your image on), run the die cut through your machine. This is your template.
6. Center your template over your stamped image. Very carefully run through your machine as you normally would for a cut.
7. Cut your  layers to size and adhere all pieces.
8. Stamp small Fleur-de-lis image on the inside of your card for a nice little surprise.

Batik Silhouette Fan

This card features a Batik water coloring technique I learned at the Create Retreat with Helen and Michael Strong's new Silhouette Fan image.

1. Ink up images with brown ink pad and stamp onto masa paper. For this this technique, the idea here is not to get a crisp image, but more of a worn look.
2. Wad up paper into a ball and soak in water for about 1 minute.
3. Gently unfold and dry flat. You can use a hair dryer to speed up drying time.
4. Use a paint brush and acrylic ink to outline the image. No need to be super straight - part of the charm of this technique - no straight lines!  Allow it to dry.
5. Use a water brush to add color with the H2O pots. I drop some clear water into the little pots and let them set for a few minutes to get to a runny toothpaste consistency. Allow a color to dry on the paper before painting a new color next to it.  The results should be imperfect - a bit rustic. Leave some white.
6. When all the sections are dry, cut around outline.
7. Use a paint brush and acrylic ink to paint in between the sections. Again, don't worry about being straight - just have fun with it. Set aside to dry.
8. Ink up frame image with gold ink and stamp onto A2 size piece of Cryogen Gold card stock.  Re-ink and stamp again to cover piece completely. Trim 1/4' off top and one side.  Adhere layers to base card. 
9. For the inside of the card, ink up smallest fan silhouette image and stamp on the bottom. Repeat to form a little fan row.

Sandy Beach

I made this scene featuring Mike's mini starfish and sand using ultra fine flower soft.

1. Use Copic airbrush and paper towel to create your background. On A2 size card stock do the sky first with a torn paper towel for the clouds.  Next use a straight edge paper towel under the sky for the horizon line, and a jagged edge paper towel at the bottom where the sand meets the water, and then airbrush the water. Cover up the water and airbrush the sand.  It's helps to have a base color in case ant spots are missed with the flower soft.  Trim 1/4" off top and one side.
2. Reuse mask paper towels to cover sky and sand. Ink up water image and stamp off onto scrap two times, then stamp into water. Oops: I forgot to stamp off a second time on the left edge - that's when I decided which side my starfish would go on. :o)
3. Spread glue over sand area. Sprinkle flower soft and press down gently. Press down in some areas a little more firmly - this will give a some dimension to your beach. Shake off access sand and put back into jar.
4. Ink up mini starfish image with VersaMark ink and stamp onto carmel card stock.  Repeat two times.  Ink up mini starfish image with VersaMark and then with carmel ink pad and stamp onto card stock. Repeat two more times. Sprinkle embossing power and heat set.
   
5. Cut out images with scissors or die cut.
6. Adhere background layer onto base card.
7. Adhere stars in corner.
8. On an A2 size piece of  white card stock, mask off large area. Use sponge to add color. Adhere remaining stars to inside. TIP: when masking for a straight line, line up your mask edge with the edge of your piece of card stock.

Color Wash and Cloisonne'

This card was inspired by Zana's  YouTube Video.  I made several A2 size backgrounds - both white and black glossy card stock.

1. Draw squiggles with a white crayon on gloss card stock.  
2. Add color with mini mister which is filled with a small scoop of Perfect Pearls, a few drops of re-inker, and water.  To see Tim's video on this Perfect Pearls mist recipe, click here.
3. Heat set. 
4. Ink up mini butterfly image image with copper ink and stamp onto black glossy scrap. Repeat for another  image,  sprinkle with emboss powder and heat set.
5. Cut out butterflies.
6. Trim layer pieces to desired size. Adhere on base card. Adhere butterflies  on the crayon lines for their trail.
7. Ink up mini butterfly image and stamp on A2 size white card stock.  Use metallic pen to draw a little trail. Trim 1/4" of one side and top. Adhere to inside of card.

Watercolored Vase

 



I used Distress Inks to paint the vase and create a colorful background. This card size  is 5 1/4" x 5 1/4".

1.  Ink up large pot image with VersaMark ink and stamp onto water color paper. Sprinkle embossing power and heat set.
2. For your color pallet, lay down color direct from Distress ink  pads onto a non stick surface, being careful not to overlap.
3. Use your paint brush to pick up color and spread into areas of embossed image.
4. When finished painting pot, spritz remaining ink with water.
5. Pick up color onto white card stock by lightly swirling it around in the ink.
6. Heat set.
7. Trim background layer size.
8. Adhere layers to base card.
9. Use shape die cut to create plants for inside of vase.
10. Lay pot onto card for placement. Mark width top of vase to use as a guide to adhere plants.
11. Adhere plants so that they stay inside your marks.
12. Use a gray marker to give a grounding for your pot and the few leaves that have fallen out.
13. Adhere pot and fallen leaves.
14. On the inside stamp a mini pot and adhere a trimmed piece of background paper for nice surprise.

Variations:  Rather than using a die cut, paint leaves with acylic paint. 

1. Use #1 flat paint brush, 671 metallic perido and wicker white. 
2. To add demension, use Outdoor dementional wicker white to trace around each leaf.

Daisy with an "I"

For this project, I used the letter "I" of Mike's alphabet set for my daisy petals.

1. To create the petals, ink up alphabet image image with white ink and stamp onto white design card stock. Repeat for several images. sprinkle with emboss powder and heat set.
2. Use punch or scissor to cut out.
3. To create the center, use circle punch to cut out circle.  Use more mustard marker to add dots - use both tips.  Add dots close together around the edge.  Go over edge dots with VersaMarker, sprinkle with clear emboss powder and heat set.
4. Trim background layers and adhere together.
5. Lay center and petals down for placement. Draw a circle around center and then set center aside. It will go onto top of petals. NOTE: I Googled daisy to get detail for center and sizing. There are many types of daisies!  :o)
6. Use a green marker to draw the flower's stem. 
7. Next, adhere petals around drawn circle. NOTE: I laid the first layer flat all around, then  overlapped  remaining petals in a few spots.
8. On the inside of the card, stamp white petals.

Waves of Medallions

When you have a combination of a lovely  image and a lovely design paper, there's not much you have to do to make a lovely card.

1. Ink up medallion images with gold ink pad, stamp on black card stock, sprinkle with embossing powder and heat set. 
2. Repeat with small medallion on white card stock.
3. Cut out all the images using punch and die cut.
4. Trim background layers to desired size.
5. Use craft knife to cut slits in waves of Japanese design paper. 
6. Place black medallions in slits and adhere to gold layer.
7. Adhere gold layer to black base card.
8. Trim an A2 size white piece of card stock 1/4" off top and off one side for the note  inside of the card. Adhere white medallion onto it.

Michael Strong Coffee Blog Hop

Directions for this project:

1. Rub anti-static bag over card stock. Ink up coffee large cup image and stamp onto card stock. Repeat for small coffee cup. Sprinkle with emboss powder and heat set.
2. Use die cut to cut a circle around  each coffee cup. Cut a slightly larger size layer for each.
3. For both the card and the box, cut  layers of design card stock to desired sizes.
4. Use craft knife to cut around swirls and slit in each coffee cup.
5. Adhere layers, position coffee cups and adhere. Note, adhere layers to box before folding.
6. Fold box and adhere sides and bottom.
7. Use copper pen to add small lines between holes on buttons.
8. Use glue dots to adhere buttons.
9. On the inside of the card, add a piece of light card stock for the note. Stamp the small coffee cup. Use copper pen to add swirls and steam.

In Flight

In our Michael Strong Yahoo Group, we have a bird challenge this month. I used wax to create my scenery beneath my bird in flight.

1. Use iron and waxes to create background, hills, foliage and sky.  Click here for tips,  and a link to a teaching video,  I learned when working with the iron.
2. After it dries, buff it with a soft towel.
3. Ink up bird image and stamp. Allow it to dry.
4. Use paint brush and acrylic paint to add color to the bird.  If you get paint some place you don't want,  gently wipe it right away with a clean paper towel.  The wax surface is easy to wipe clean. Do this immediately when the paint is still fresh.
5. Assemble layers.

A Splash of Color in Your Coffee?

Pink is the splash today!  And a touch of gold on this lovely coffee cup.

1. Choose your design papers. I thought this swirl design went so well with this cute little coffee cup image!
2. Ink up coffee cup image, sprinkle with emboss powder and heat set. Add a splash of pink to the image and line areas of cup with gold pen.
3. Use die cut to cut circle around image and a layer scalloped circle.
4. Trim all layers to fit on base card.
5. Adhere everything down. All done!

Arizona Sunset

More Encaustics! I can not help myself. Once I get started, I just get caught up in all the colors and the surprise of the design.  :o)  When I finished this piece, it reminded me of an Arizona sunset.

1. Ink up image with gray ink pad and stamp image for placement on glossy A2 size piece of  card stock. NOTES: (1) I stamped this image upside down   (2) Since stamping for placement I only inked up a part of the image as a guide for the painting.  I also planned not to use the handles.
2. On a scrap piece of card stock, ink up image with StazOn and stamp.
3. Use iron and waxes to create back ground.  Click here to see a post with tips and Encaustic tutorial video link.
4. Use your stamped guide to show where the leaves will come out of the vase.  Add a little wax just below the top of the vase and then use the tip of the iron to pull and shape the leaves.
5. Use the stylus with the drawing tip to add gold wax to accent the leaves and also the vase on scrap  card stock.  Follow the pattern of the vase.  TIP: use a little bit of clear wax with the gold to reduce the strength of the color.
6. Cut out vase.
7. Adhere layers & colored  image over guide.  Stamp portion of image on the inside of the card (Encore gold metallic ink) and use a metallic pen (Sakura) to draw in leaves.

Talk to the Hand

Today's card features Michael Strong's hand in hand image.  The designer card stock I chose has an embossed paisley image and is also designed by Mike. It coordinates very well with his hand image. 

1. Rub anti static bag across white card stock
2. Ink up large hand image with black craft ink, sprinkle with emboss powder and heat set.
3. Choose two  or three coordinating PanPastel colors to match design paper.. Use sponge soft tool to pick up a small amount of lightest color and then spread it inside the image. Pick up the next shade darker and apply the same way. Repeat until you get the colors you desire. Use a clean paper towel in a circular motion to remove pastel from embossed image, also to burnish the pastel into the card stock.
4. Cut out image.
5. Adhere ribbon to design layer and onto base card.
6. Use pop dots to adhere hand.
7. Stamp small hand on vanilla card stock and adhere to the  inside the card for the note.

Ink:  Stampin' Up! craft basic black
Accessories:  PanPastel Artists' Pastels, Sponge soft tool, Stampin' Up! emboss buddy, ribbon, and black emboss powders, pop dots
