The Spirit of Spring

I am feeling spring in the air!! In the Chicagoland area, the temperature is in the 70's in March!!   People have lost their minds - wearing shorts and flip flops. :o) Me too!

I'm sharing cards I made in the spirit of Spring. Very simple to make!  I saw this technique The Carol Duvall show - remember that show?! I miss Carol and her guests...  Tim Holtz demo'd it.

1. Colored images - markers direct to rubber, spritz with water, stamped onto watercolor paper, and then blended color with a water brush.
2. Cut and adhered layers. That's it! Ready to mail!

Basket of Tulips

I made this card for the Club Posh February card of the month. I've been coloring with Spectrum Noir Markers and am having a great time! They are alcohol based ink markers priced very reasonable. They offer rich colors and refills.  You can see videos about them HERE.

1. Inked up basket image and stamped onto white card stock.
2. Colored with Spectrum alcohol ink markers. Colored the image using two or three markers in a color family for shading.  With these markers, the color family is identified using the letter(s). When I have a large area, I find three shades work best. For smaller areas, I use two. I dig the rich ink from Spectrum Noir.  They blend so easily!
3. After coloring the basket and flowers, I added a little bling over the colored tulip flowers with Twinkling H20. While that was drying, I used a Spellbinders die cute for the layer behind the basket of flowers. I left the die in place and used the Copic Air Brush system with a very pale pink Spectrum marker to create a light pink background.
4.  I used a water based marker and Twinkling H20s to add color to the butterfly image and stamped  onto my airbrushed background. I outlined his wings with a water proof pen.
5. I cut out the basket of tulips and the single tulip. Adhere the images to the airbrushed die cut background.
6. Inked up the itty bitty hearts with a red ink pad and stamped. Outlined them with a water proof pen. 
7. Adhere all the layers.

In-Direct Cocktails

I'm using another Stamps Happen image to highlight the in-direct technique with Tombows Dual Brush Pens.  For this card I used a white outline for a different look. I really like it with glasses and the dark background. I used the picture on the wooden stamp for a color guide.

1. Inked up  image with watermark ink pad and stamped onto watercolor paper, sprinkled embossing power and heat set.
2. I scribbled markers onto plastic pallet.  Used the water brush to spread water inside an embossed, then picked up color with water brush and spread color. I use a combination of dabbing and spreading color. I mixed different colors and just had fun with it.
3. I skipped over an embossed area so I would not be coloring right next to a wet area and just continued dabbing and spreading. Repeated until I colored all the glasses.
4. For the background, I laid down one coat, let it dry, then added a second coat. I wanted a lot of contrast.  I found the wide tip water brush to be more effective for larger areas, and for  getting a clean edge around the glasses and inside the boarder.
5. After it dried, I used a die cut to trim it.  Click here for a tip on getting your die cut where you want it around your image.
6. assembled layers and adhered the dew drops.

October Club Scrap Jr. Kit

I am a member of Club Scrap and get the most beautiful variety of  papers, card stock, stencils and rubber every single month.  This month I used supplies from the kit to make this lovely card and also used one of Mike's images. This card measures 5 1/4 " x 5 1/4".

1. I taped the stencil down on an area of design card stock.  NOTE: I strategically placed the stencil down to make sure the part of the design on the card stock I wanted would be on my finished card.
2. Dabbed paint all over the stencil.  Carefully lifted stencil and pulled off tape. I immediately rinsed the stencil off and used a soft brush to clean it while the water was running on it.
3. After the card stock dried, I cut the square that I wanted.
4. Then dabbed paint around the border. Allowed it to dry.
5. Dabbed paint onto rubber image and stamped onto card stock. I immediately cleaned the rubber with water.
6. After image dried, cut it out with scissors.
7. Stamped a few images on a piece of white cards stock for the inside of card.
8. Adhered everything together.

A Distressed Fleur-de-lis

I made this card for our Michael Strong Yahoo Group challenge.   Hetty, our group leader, gave us the layout. 

1. The first thing I did was picked out my colors. 
2. Inked up texture  image with  distress ink pad,  stamped on card stock, sprinkled embossing powder. Repeated for a random design. Heat set.
3. Repeated for each color.
4. Inked up Fleur-de-lis image , stamped on white scrap piece of card stock, sprinkle with embossed powder and heat set.
5. Use die cut to cut out image. TIP: I learned this tip from my Stampin' Sister Judy at Mike's Yahoo group. Using a scrap piece card stock ( a color different than what you stamped your image on), run the die cut through your machine. This is your template.
6. Center your template over your stamped image. Very carefully run through your machine as you normally would for a cut.
7. Cut your  layers to size and adhere all pieces.
8. Stamp small Fleur-de-lis image on the inside of your card for a nice little surprise.

Batik Silhouette Fan

This card features a Batik water coloring technique I learned at the Create Retreat with Helen and Michael Strong's new Silhouette Fan image.

1. Ink up images with brown ink pad and stamp onto masa paper. For this this technique, the idea here is not to get a crisp image, but more of a worn look.
2. Wad up paper into a ball and soak in water for about 1 minute.
3. Gently unfold and dry flat. You can use a hair dryer to speed up drying time.
4. Use a paint brush and acrylic ink to outline the image. No need to be super straight - part of the charm of this technique - no straight lines!  Allow it to dry.
5. Use a water brush to add color with the H2O pots. I drop some clear water into the little pots and let them set for a few minutes to get to a runny toothpaste consistency. Allow a color to dry on the paper before painting a new color next to it.  The results should be imperfect - a bit rustic. Leave some white.
6. When all the sections are dry, cut around outline.
7. Use a paint brush and acrylic ink to paint in between the sections. Again, don't worry about being straight - just have fun with it. Set aside to dry.
8. Ink up frame image with gold ink and stamp onto A2 size piece of Cryogen Gold card stock.  Re-ink and stamp again to cover piece completely. Trim 1/4' off top and one side.  Adhere layers to base card. 
9. For the inside of the card, ink up smallest fan silhouette image and stamp on the bottom. Repeat to form a little fan row.

Little Girl...Big Shoes

I shared a few weeks ago that I have been on a color kick - busy coloring Mo's adorable images.   I stopped coloring long enough to put one of the images into a card. :o) This little sweetie pie is walking around in Big Shoes.

1. Color the image.  There are many videos and tutorials out there on using Copics  I have  learned a lot from Marianne, Sandy, and Suzanne.  Sandy teaches at My Creative Classroom and has Copic class starting next week. Suzanne has several videos on YouTube.  After watching, be sure to practice.  You will get the blending effect you want when you combine the right ink, paper and technique.  Sandy was the one who introduced me to the card stock I used for this project - Cryogen White. I'm almost embarrassed to say how much I have. Don't want to run out! :o)
2. Cut out the image using a die cut. Leave the die cut in place and blend color around the inside edge, adding blending in further on the bottom to give her grounding. Remove die cut.
3. Use marker to add a shadow under the little girl and her purse.
4. To get matching ribbon, run ink pad over ribbon several times to desired shade.
5. Adhere all layers.

Coffee with Hetty

Hetty is a lovely, talented woman who is the moderator for our Michael Strong Yahoo Group.  Mike named his newly released coffee set after her. I'm so excited for Hetty!! She works hard to support our group, where lots of ideas are shared about creativity.  This card is 5 1/4" x 5 1/4".

1. Rub anti static bag over water color paper. Ink up large coffee cup image with watermark ink, stamp  onto watercolor paper, sprinkle with embossing powder and heat set. 
2. Choose color theme/design papers and markers.  I picked several from my Club Scrap
   collection  and narrowed it down.  I've been a member for years and just adore their card stock/papers!! They have great designs and texture on quality  paper.
3. Add color to the image with markers. Start with lightest shades and cover the largest area with in an embossed area,  then spread with water brush. Allow to dry.  Color with the darkest shade covering a smaller area and spread color with water brush. Allow to dry.
4. Cut out image.  Cut layers out of design paper/card stock.
5. Adhere layers.
6. Use a VersaMarker to color a part of the swirls image that will fit over coffee cup. Use a scrap piece of paper to mask where coffee cup will be, and stamp swirls about the coffee. Sprinkle with emboss powder and heat set.
7. Adhere coffee cup.
8. Using dual art brush pen to ink image, stamp small coffee cup image inside card. Draw swirls above cup.

Art Impressions Challenge

This week the Art Impression Challenge is to use three or more design papers.   That IS a challenge for me - I usually use only one, maybe two. :o)  This card is 5 1/4 x 5 1/4".

1. Choose design paper and primary markers to match.  I remembered I had some m&ms design papers - perfect for scales. :o) For each primary color, choose one or two more shades in that color family, and any other colors to complete coloring your image.
2. Rub anti static bag over water color paper. Ink up girlfriends image with black ink, stamp  onto watercolor paper, sprinkle with embossing powder and heat set. 
3. Cut rectangle around image.  Cut layers out of design paper/card stock.
4. Add color to the image with markers. Start with lightest shades and cover the largest area with in an embossed area,  then spread with water brush. Allow to dry. Color the next shade  covering less area, then spread with water brush. Allow to dry. Color with the darkest shade  covering a small area and spread color with water brush. Allow to dry.
5. Repeat for the rest of the areas to color.
6. Add a subtle grounding of the light blue marker and spread color with water brush.
7. Use the glaze pen on the dial of each scale. Set aside to dry. Apply glaze pen again.
8. For the inside of the card, stamp sentiment and add coordinating design paper.  This little guy's
   expression is just so cute and goes with these images.  See!  One day you'll find a use of all the design paper you've been buying too!  That's my justification and I'm sticking to it!

Mother's Day Bouquet Resist

Here's a little Mother's Day Bouquet using clear embossing powder.

1. Rub anti static bag over water color paper. Ink up image with VersaMark  ink pad, stamp onto watercolor paper, sprinkle with embossing powder and heat set.
2. To get your water color pallet, turn ink pads over and press them onto non-stick craft sheet side by side, not overlapping. If you do not have a craft sheet, you can press the ink pads  onto a piece of plastic or spare acrylic block.
3. Pick up color with the water brush and apply over flowers. The embossed image will act as a resist and the color will fill in around the image. I didn't worry about being precise - I wanted the colors to flow and mix. NOTE: your water brush should be moist, not dripping.
4. Dab excess color off onto a paper towel in between colors.
5. Allow ink to dry.
6. Cut oval around bouquet. Leave the die cut around the image. Spread clear water all around the image. Pick up some blue and fill in color. I picked up other colors from the flowers along the way. I like that look!
7. Adhere layers and ribbon. The yellow layer is the other side of the Club Scrap design card stock.
8. Ink up bouquet image with old olive ink and stamp partial image into the corner of  a piece of A2 size vanilla card stock.  Ink up sentiment and stamp near the top.  Trim 1/4" off top and one side. Adhere to the inside of the card.

Oops!

This little image is so adorable - I just had to have it! I picked it up last month at Peddler's Den when I was there teaching a Tombow Dual Brush Pen Techniques class. It was only fitting that I use that technique the first time I used the image. :o)

1. Rub anti static bag over water color paper. Ink up image with black ink, stamp onto watercolor paper, sprinkle with embossing powder and heat set. 
2. Add color to the image with markers. Start with lightest shades and cover the largest area within an embossed area,  then spread with water brush. Allow to dry. Color the next shade covering less area, then spread with water brush. Allow to dry. Color with the darkest shade  covering a small area and spread color with water brush.  Allow to dry.
3. Repeat for the rest of the areas to color. NOTE: for the kitten - after I colored him light yellow, I drew slightly darker yellow lines vertically for his fur, then lightly ran the waterbrush along the lines.
4. Adhere all layers.
5. Stamp small kitten into corner of A2 size card stock. color with markers. Use a white pencil for his face. I turned the design paper over for a smooth yellow surface. Trim 1/4 " off top and off one side. Adhere to inside.
6. Be sure to sign your little piece of art!

A Lovely Tree

This card was created using PanPastels and Distress Inks.  It features a lovely tree image and was inspired by an ArtKure YouTube video.  This card is 4 1/2 x 6".

1. Add the sky background with PanPastels Artists' Pastels. Use two shades of blue to give a little more interest.  Sweep across the card stock in a horizontal fashion. The  creamy texture has very little dust and creates a rich background.
2. Add a couple shades of  green and a little brown for the ground.
3. To get your water color pallet, turn ink pads over and press them onto non-stick craft sheet side by side, not overlapping. If you do not have a craft sheet, you can press the ink pads onto a piece of plastic or spare acrylic block.
4. Start with lighter green, pick up color with the water brush and apply it to the the branches, where leaves would be. NOTE: your water brush should be moist, not dripping.
5. Dab excess color off onto a paper towel.
6. Pick up the darker green and brush across random areas of the tree. 
7. Dab excess color off onto paper towel.
8. Pick up brown ink. Starting at the bottom of the tree, brush up the center where the trunk is and out on a few of the branches. Don't worry about being precise. The nice thing about this type of image is that it is very forgiving. You are creating a little art piece - it does not have to be perfect. Just have fun!
9. Stamp the image onto your background.  With the chisel water brush (moist, not dripping), hold it upright and lightly stipple where you want your leaves to be. Periodically, wipe your brush off and continue.
10. Use same brush to create a light shadow by pulling down the color from the base of the tree. I tried both a regular card stock and water color paper. I used the water color paper for the finished card.
11. Dab excess color off onto a paper towel.  Allow to dry
12. Adhere layers.
13. Ink up tree top and stamp inside the card along the bottom.

A Touch of Spring to Celebrate 15 years

I made this card to help celebrate Michael Strong's 15 year anniversary of designing rubber stamps. Click here to read his interesting story!  You'll also see some new stamp images he has coming out.  I just got the Kimono! I can't wait to design with it!

This card measures 4 1/2 x 6" and has 15 elements on it to celebrate 15 years.

1. Stamp flower and leaf images on the smoother side of the  watercolor paper, sprinkle with embossing powder and heat set. 
2. Using three shades of a color family to watercolor the images: starting with the lightest color, fill in a section, leaving a small white space. Use a waterbrush to spread the color in the area. After it dries, add  the next darkest color - laying down less color -  spread it with the water brush. After it dries, I add a small amount of the darkest color and spread that. TIP: When watercoloring, wet one section at a time so you don't get hard lines. Always start with a clean brush in the lightest area and move to your darkest  area.
3. Cut the images out.
4. Cut the design card stock so that one complete flower pot is the focal point.  Use the VersaMark Marker to draw a stem and add a line over the black swirl.  Sprinkle emboss powder and heat set.
5. Adhere layers to the base card. TIP: The liquid adhesive allows you more time to shimmy and position paper pieces.
6. Adhere all pieces onto top layer of card. Use Crystal Effects and a toothpick for the Dew Drops.
7. Adhere a piece of design card stock inside for the note.  The pattern is light enough to write over.

Shimmering Background for ATCs

For this months ATC trade our theme is architecture.  I wanted to do a shimmering background and use supplies I bought but had not used yet. :o)

1. Spritz watercolor paper with water.  Use paint brush to spread Shimmerz paints around in random fashion. Dip the brush in water to help spread color smoothly.  Use a variety of colors to fill sheet of paper.
2. While paper is still wet, spritz  with Tim Holtz recipe for  Perfect Pearl mist recipe. I used gold Perfect Pearls  and yellow ink  mixture. Dab randomly with a paper towel.
3. Allow paper to dry. TIP: If your paper is curled when it dries, set heavy books on top over night to flatten.
4. Cut into ATC size - 2 1/2 x 3 1/2 inches.
5. In up images with black ink and stamp on individual ATCs.
6. Ink up images with gold  ink and  stamp on individual ATCs, sprinkle with embossing powder and heat set.

Church Scene

For this month's StampscapesII swap, we are  doing a scene with a church in it. I chose this church from Stampin' Up!  It is a winter scene and I want to create a summer scene.  I used a marker to color the part of the image I wanted. I used a pen to fill in windows and parts I didn't cover with the marker. I stamped on copy paper first to practice building my scene. Please also click here to see tips about building a scene.

1. Stamp church image.
2. Stamp trees around church. Use stampa-ma-jig to help with placement.
3. Mask church. Stamp larger trees behind church - once direct and immediately again a little to the right, and a little higher.
4. Stamp mountains.
5. Remove mask. Use fine point pen to extend ground, build up ground around tree trunks, and fill in any places that may have been missed due to the masking.
6. Use markers and color stylus to fill in color.
7. Cut circle around colored image.
8. Cut a second circle the same size out of white card stock. Stamp clouds in sky.
9. Cut across top of mountains of colored image.  Lay colored image over clouds. Use liquid adhesive so you can shimmy paper to allow for perfect placement.
10. Adhere all layers.

Can you Resist Paisley Print? Yes!

I used a resist technique to create a matching layer with PanPastel Artists' Pastels  - my new favorite medium! :o)

1. Ink up large paisley frame image with VersaMark watermark  ink and partially stamp on one side of  card stock, sprinkle with embossing powder and heat set.
2. Ink up small paisley image with VersaMark watermark ink and stamp in blank area of card stock. Repeat several times to create a random design,  sprinkle with embossing powder and heat set.
3. Choose two  or three coordinating PanPastel colors to match design paper. Use sponge soft tool to pick up a small amount of lightest color and then spread onto card stock in a circular motion.  Pick up a shade darker and apply the same way. Repeat until you get the colors you desire. Use a clean paper towel in a circular motion to remove pastel from embossed images, also to burnish the pastel into the card stock.  This is my first time using the PanPastels on a finished product - I know there's much more that can be done with them. I'm starting slow. :o)
4. Ink up small  paisley image with gold ink and stamp onto white card stock,  sprinkle with embossing powder and heat set.  The gold ink and clear embossing powder together result in a soft image.  Cut out using die cut.
5. Chose what part of your pastel layer you want to use on your final card. Cut it down.
6. Adhere all layers.  Note:   When I was thinking about my layout on the design paper, I purposely cut it so it would include both the bold and subtle images.  The design card stock is so pretty! It is designed by Mike - that's why they coordinate so well with his stamps. ;o)

Hambo Hockey Outdoors

Woke up in the middle of the night thinking about this idea. :o)  Does that ever happen to you?!  This card is for the Hambo Stamps DT call. See details here.  

This is an A2 size card. 

1. To print both images, I inserted the digi image into my Power Point application and made it the size I wanted.  I copied a second image and then selected it. With in the rotate feature, I flipped it horizontally. This made a reverse image.  TIP: The first time you print, print it on copy paper. Check to make sure it is the size you want.  When you are sure the size you want, then print on your nice card stock.
2. Once you have the images you want printed on your card stock, use the Multiliner pen to add lines to the hockey sticks, and also slightly change one of the numbers on a jersey - the boys are on the same team. :o)
3. Color the images using two or three markers in a color family for shading.  Use a white pen to make the numbers pop on their jerseys, and also on their skate and glove laces. Add a little highlight to their helmets. Use silver metallic pen to color the skate blades. Allow to dry.
4. Cut each image out.
5. On a piece of white card stock brayer blue ink.  The Pearlescent will give your background a nice  sheen.
6. Cut layers to the sizes you want and adhere.
7.  Use pop dots for the boys and puck.
   
8. For the inside of the card, print or draw a hockey puck with the Multiliner pen.  Color for a nice little surprise.

Background Technique for ATCs

For my ATC live trade this month I decided to use a technique I learned from MaryJo Mcgraw at the Carson City Rubberstamp Convention.  I pulled out previously stamped and colored images for this project. To create the background:

1. Tear strips of Eclipse tape of different widths and lay down on full sheet of cardstock.
2. Use direct to paper technique to lay down color - slide your ink pad across the paper. I used a variety of ink pads and got various results. I suggest you use what you have to find what you like.
3. After laying down the first color, move the strips and lay down the second color. Repeat until you get the results you want.  I created four different backgrounds with variations of ink pads.
4. For one of the sheets, I added glitter, using the Pearl's Mist Tim Holtz recipe.
5. Cut card stock to ATC size pieces. I like a boarder around my designs, so I trim a slightly smaller. 
6. Lay cut out images over ATCs to find the combinations you like.
7. Stamp a black image as part of the background.
8. Adhere cutout images on top.
9. Adhere background layer to an ATC size (2.5" x 3.5") base card. 
10. Use glitter and glitter pens to add a little bling and highlights.

Fall Bouquet - Big & Little

 

This fall bouquet features the beautiful colors I can see outside my kitchen window, reds, yellows and oranges - all in a lovely vase.  I got the background for my vase from my shaving cream stash.

1. To make a shaving cream background, spray shaving cream into a shallow small pan. Squeeze a few drops of each color re-inker. For this background I used yellow, orange and rust.   Use a knife or popsicle stick to slowly swirl the colors around. Be careful not to over swirl, or you'll mix your colors together.
2. Take a matt piece of A2 size card stock and lay into the shaving cream. Press down gently. After a few seconds remove.  After about a minute, scoop shaving cream off of card. You'll see a cool design. Repeat for more cool backgrounds - each one is unique. Add more drops of color if you choose. You'll find the first few have the most color and the later ones are more subtle. Both types can be used for backgrounds.  You will be able to make several.
3. Set them aside to dry before using.  If they do not go flat, set several books on top of them overnight. 
4. Pick an area of shaving cream ink design you want on your vase. Ink up vase image with copper ink, stamp, sprinkle embossing power and heat set.
5. Cut out portion of vase image. Set aside.
6. Use flower die cut to cut flower shape and then emboss. 
7. While the card stock is still in the die cut, airbrush color onto it.  To remove the paper from the die cut, use a toothpick to push it out.
8. You can use alcohol to remove color from your die cut pieces.  Repeat for two of each color and three leaves.
9. Die cut large scallop circle.
10. Cut design paper to A2 size and trim 1/4" off top and one side. Use corner punch on design paper and base card to create rounded corners on right side of card.
11. Adhere design paper onto base card. Adhere large scallop circle.
12. Layout your bouquet and leaves to your liking.  Before you adhere the flowers, use a bone folder or other pointy object to press in the center of each flower and slightly bend pedals up with your fingers. Note: With a smaller flower, you can simple press and the pedals pop up. With larger flowers, the pedals need a little help. 
13. Apply adhesive in center of flower and press it down in the center into place. Repeat for entire bouquet.
14. Below is a photo of an ATC version. The vase is turned upside down. Such a versatile stamp image!
