Rich Colorful Technique with Stencils

Hello Beautiful!

Today I'm sharing some one of my favorite techniques with stencils. I really dig the rich vibrant colors and interesting texture.

I am preparing for a Vendor Boutique  that will be held at the 2019 Transformation Conference - a Women's entrepreneurship event - in October and making greeting cards by the dozen. I am mass producing backgrounds. It's so easy to do with this technique. 

First, I picked out stencils, choosing designs that had some detail. 

I used gloss gel medium to provide texture and alcohol inks for the beautiful color. Scroll down to click on a link to a  step by step video I did.

 

I was first introduced to this technique by MaryBeth Shaw.  MaryBeth has so many cool ways to use stencils, as well as a variety of ways to add texture and interest in artwork. I love her workshops - online and in person!

Mother/Daughter Weekend At The Improv

Allison and I had the most wonderful time #AtTheImprov with MaryBeth Shaw (MB), Seth Apter and a room full of talented artists!

A couple years ago Allison and I attended a workshop with MaryBeth and Seth at Mary Beth's studio in St. Louis and had a great time. Please click here to see the photos.  We had the opportunity to do it again this past weekend.  We spent our days in MaryBeth's Studio and our evenings at the cutest hotel.   Words cannot express all the awesome moments of the weekend. Sharing a few photos to show how special it was for me.

One of my favorite new techniques - alcohol inks dripped on metal sheets - die cut by Seth.

 

My journal and two canvases. I asked for tips, techniques and input from MB and Seth!! Ohhh, how I enjoyed the whole process!

 

Another favorite technique I learned involved fiber paste and yes, I have ordered some. :) I made this real cool texture with the paste and a stencil and then dripped Golden fluid and high flow acrylics over it.

Here are my absolute favorite two pieces from the workshop!

The one on the right is from a fun exercise the whole class participated in.  We each got a piece of paper and put our name on the back, then we passed it around the room and every single person put some type of mark/stamp/stencil/drawing/etc... It's special because we each touched it. I'm putting mine in my journal!

The canvas on the left was used by Seth to show us attachment techniques - it has holes and a few splatters. After I add my contribution - color - to the piece, it will be a collaboration between Seth and me. LOL! A very special piece from the workshop!

 

The next several photos capture the theme of where we stayed, The Moonrise Hotel.  The theme, decor and artwork was just so cool, and the food was delicious!  Small warning - it is right next to a club and you'll hear lots of music, as well as you can hear your neighbors. That aside, we really enjoyed it! We knew it was going to be a fabulous weekend when we saw our room number - the street number of our first home.

After I got home I hung up my artwork in my creative space (I keep looking at it and smiling).

 

On the first day, as we went around the room introducing ourselves, I wrote down each name. I just adhered the piece of paper in my journal from the first MB/Seth workshop, next to the names from the first class. I'll also put the class art piece in that journal.   Ahhhhh, what a lovely, fun group.

New Alcohol Ink Art Community!

There's a new Community in town - Alcohol Ink Art Community!! I have the honor and pleasure of being a contributor!! I'm so excited to create with such talented artists! When you join the Alcohol Ink Art Community , you get ACCESS to exclusive alcohol ink art resources. The library includes hours of alcohol ink painting lessons, projects, templates, guides and resources for learning to create, share, promote and sell your artwork online!  All levels of artist are welcome and encouraged to join!

 

Here, I'm sharing a piece I did by dripping, tilting, dripping and tilting. Fun, fun, fun!

I used shades of blue (Ranger Indigo, Stream; Pinata Sapphire Blue), a little gold, a little white, a little black (Ranger Pitch Black; Pinata Mantilla Black [the shy one] and two types of blending solution on a piece of translucent Yupo paper.

 Whenever I get new supplies, I like to get to know it. The first thing I do with new colors is create a color chart. For my alcohol inks (AIs),  I  actually dedicated a journal to getting to know my colors and practice techniques.  I started with a 9x12" mixed media size journal, and had it cut in half at my local office store -  economical nice size pages to work with (learned that from MaryBeth!). 

I used a circle die cut and ruler to figure out how many circles I could get on a page, allowing space to write in the colors. 

Next, I added a layer of clear gesso over the page. After it dried, I filled the page with circles using an alcohol friendly ink pens - I did not want the ink to smear.

I set up the bottles in color wheel order. I wrote the names, leaving some spaces - room for new colors. :) I used A and P to note the brand.  For my Copic and Spectrum Noir ink refills, I use the marker chart I created as a color reference so no need to add them here. 

I dripped color, not minding if it blended with the color next to it - actually I encouraged it, as it's one of favorite things about creating with AIs - the blending!  NOTES and TIPS: (1) start at the top and work your way down :) (2) you can see how the different colors spread (3) do not open the cap over your color chart :)  (4) have a side paper/journal to drip on before you drip on your chart to see how fast it drips (5) because you are working over gesso, you can blot color out while wet (6) have fun and embrace going outside the lines!

On another page I tested various pens and markers from my stash over the ink. 

Over the years I have collected many pens and markers - thanks to all the wonderful artists and crafters who post their favorite pens and markers. :)  I started with a layer of white gesso. After it dried completely, I dripped, dropped, and blended with finger (which was in a glove). I wrote with a variety of pens and markers. Now, I have reference of how they look over the AIs.  

Sharing one last photo of the day - my desk space...this is what happens when I have blank paper and pens/pencils. hehehe

Just Coloring in November and December

Hello Beautiful People!

During the months of November and December, I'm just coloring and coloring and coloring.  Each day I'll post at least one image/design on my social media sites: Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest and Google+.  Most of the coloring will be with markers, but I will sprinkle in some other supplies as well! Ohhh, all the colors!! I hope you will be inspired to create something that makes you smile.

Designing with Digis

One of the reasons I love designing with digis is that you can make the image any size you want - well any size your printer will print out. :)  I used one image in different sizes on greeting cards and in my art journal page.

 I drew this lovely woman in Procreate on my iPad, inspired by beautiful photos and images I saw on the internet. I just googled head wraps and found hundreds of images. 

 

I inserted the image into Microsoft Power Point, softened her lines, sized her and printed smaller images on cardstock  for the greeting cards and a larger image on copy paper for the art journal page. I colored the smaller images with markers.

The greeting card backgrounds are from a variety - purchased design paper, alcohol ink backgrounds I made (click here to see my post for making the one included here), and gelli prints I made (click here to see how I make my gelli prints). 

 I used matte medium to adhere the larger image on a page in my journal. The background was created using layers of paint and Stencilgirl stencils...

Alcohol Was Calling Me

Hello Beautiful People!

I was watching MaryBeth's video on alcohol inks and stencils, sooooo I had to get mine out - they were calling me. :) In her video MaryBeth reminded me that I had Cathy's book, Pigments of Your Imagination: Creating with Alcohol Inks! I was inspired to break out all my alcohol related tools & inks, and picked out some stencils I thought would make cool patterns.   I also got out my notes from the classes I took with Cathy at CREATE Retreats.  Click here to see past posts I've done featuring alcohol.

Here's a photo of my desk after I pulled all the supplies out.

 

Next, I just played with a variety of techniques - starting with some texture... 

dripping, swirling, and cling wrap...

the design on the left was made with cling wrap... the one on the right is the wax paper that was underneath the one on the left - I dig them both!

after the grounds dried, I added color - love this texture!

In a few days I'll share this one as a completed card - with one of my face drawings.

Saving all these for backgrounds!

"Not Yo' Mama's Stencils!"

Attended a fabulous techniques workshop last weekend with MaryBeth Shaw! This was my favorite technique!

After I got home I just played and played. I actually already had all the supplies. Don't you love when that happens! :)

I tried a variety of glossyish' texture pastes.

This is my creative space before the painting began.

Me, MaryBeth and Marge (my dear friend to introduced me to stamping, which got all my art juices flowing again!) You can tell how much fun I'm having by how messy my hair is. hehehe

Decorative Utensil Holder

I found a plain utensil holder at Target for $6 and turned it into a bright, functional art piece for my kitchen.  

I started by cleaning the holder with soap and water, and then alcohol. I  covered the outside with gesso.  NOTE:  the gesso is in a dauber bottle to make it easy to spread and as well as adds texture. I replaced the top with ranger top.

 

After it dried completely, I used stencils and alcohol inks to add color.  I just played until I was happy with it.

It brightens up my kitchen!

The World with Alcohol

Well...not the kind of alcohol you may think. :)  Alcohol inks....

I created the background first by dropping color, spraying alcohol, tilting, smooshing and kissing.  Why make just one background, when you can make many?!

 I drew in the land with a metallic pen and filled in color with a paintbrush using brown and green shades.

 Had a great time making a mess!
