Shout Outs: I love drawing and coloring faces! Over the last couple of years I have been practicing and practicing. Below are some of the key artists that I've learned from and been inspired by. Consistent messaged I've heard from them is "practice, practice, practice" and "you will find your own style." Appreciate these women!
Over the years I've take a few drawing classes - in person and on line. I've practiced and practiced searching for my own style. I think your own style just shows when you're not even trying. :o) My favorite tool/supply is what's in my hand at the time I'm creating. I find joy in coloring, painting and stamping - stamping is way to get down an image quickly so I can start coloring right away. hehehe. You may find that you truly have a favorite that brings you joy when you are creating with it. Use it! Run with it!
When I took a class last year at the CREATE Mixed Media retreat I first heard about the book Steal Like an Artist. I ordered within a week and read it as soon as I received it. I found it really captured what I was experiencing. I've been influenced and inspired by so many talented artists - through their blogs, youtube videos and classes I've taken. I've learned so much about color and technique. I hope that you are inspired by the artwork that I share and that you are finding your own style. I want to encourage you to enjoy all the moments!
For the journal page I'm sharing today, I drew the face in my journal first (the journal I created in Marybeth and Seth's class - you can click here for a post I shared). I masked 1/2 the face and colored around it using a variety of paints and this this month's StencilClub large stencil. I used markers to add shading and highlights.
Once I got started working in my book, I was having so much fun, I did not want to stop. I used a variety of coloring and drawing supplies, as well as my own stamps and drawings. I drew directly in the book and also printed out some of my art pieces in different sizes. As soon as I finished my book, my new stamps from Seth came in! I can't wait to use them!
Last weekend my stampin' sister Marge and I spent two days creating with artist/designer/instructor Seth Apter and some lovely, talented artists. I had the best time!! We met at Crystal's. Our mission was to use cool techniques that Seth shared to create a book filled with pages of our own designs. This photo is where I am now.
I'll continue working on each page, adding my own designs, collaging and incorporating my drawings. This is how I started.
Below are some photos of the lovely ladies that attended.
Toni and Marge (I sat with them and we had the best time sharing art supplies and giggling).
Carol and Joan.
Marge, Mara and Renee.
Norine, Julia, and Sue.
Jenny and Bonnie.
I'll post photos of the book when it is complete. I'm looking forward to doodling on the colorful pages!
There's something about faces.... I just really enjoy sketching and painting them. Practicing drawing eyes, noses and mouths is relaxing. This face was inspired by a book I have, Mixed Media Portraits with Pam Carriker.
Since I went to the CREATE retreat, I have been so inspired to draw and paint every day. It's Kent's fault. :) I set up a set of markers next to my favorite chair in the front of the TV - after all it is football season and I need to watch my Lions. Today I'm sharing another book cover I painted. It's our house log. I keep a record of all the stuff we have done to the house in one book, with contact numbers and dates of work - of course I had to have a house on the front. :)
I painted a base of white acrylic paint and used a variety of acrylic paints and stencils from StencilGirl for the background. I drew the house (inspired by a stamp from Hero Arts) with a black Sharpie Paint pen and used LUXE inks to add some additional color and shading. It did not take long and I got my drawing and painting fix for the day.
I am a life long learning and love going to workshops and hanging out with people who love to color as much as me. I appreciate all the wonderful instructors I had at CREATE. To see my CREATE posts, click on the days below:
